OFAC Names Individuals and entities in Turkey, Malta and Iran as NPWMD Violators ~
Iran continues to utilize third countries in its covert efforts to develop its weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile development programmes under United Nations and international sanctions. OFAC this week named individuals and entities located not only in Iran, but in Turkey and Malta as well, as NPWMD violators. It is suggested that compliance officers at commercial banks whose clients are engaged in maritime trade review the OFAC Actions Page*, and check the newly-designated entities against both client lists, and wire transfer records.
Please note that some of the designated entities have known addresses both inside Iran, as well in other countries. Since most experts agree that the sanctions are having the desired effect, and that the Iranian economy is hurting, look for an expansion of the current efforts to acquire dual-purpose goods for the WMD programme through other countries in the region.
