Bout appears in United States District Court

Accused arms trafficker Viktor Bout had a First Appearance before a Federal judge yesterday in  the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, where he reportedly entered an oral "not guilty" plea in English before the court. Lawyers claiming to represent him have stated that he will enter a formal plea shortly. Bout stands charged with four offences, including money laundering and conspiring to kill American citizens in Colombia with the FARC, the designated Colombian global terrorist organisation. The Government of Russia continued to object to what it regards as an illegal extradition, which it contends should not have occurred whilst an appeal was pending.
